Children, Teens & Family Meditation
Children and teens may meditate for as many minutes as their age, increasing meditation by a minute each year. A seven year old would start at 7 minutes. They may increase their time before their next birthday if they wish, trying not to meditate less then their age. Teens may increase their time weekly by 5 minutes, until they reach 30 minutes daily, it they wish. The best time for a child may be at prayer time at bedtime or in the morning, either time, with an adult or older sibling meditating with them. If over tired or not feeling well, meditation may be done temporarily lying on one's back. This is better than skipping a day. Adults may meditate in the presence of an infant and toddlers, teaching them meditation when they reach 4-6 years old, depending on the child's attention span. Families may meditate weekly for 30 minutes, allowing younger children to meditate as long as comfortable and then if possible to remain quietly in the room, resting/playing/reading until the meditation session is complete. If you wish to teach your child or teenager meditation, you need to first experience the meditation yourself by requesting the free meditation instruction packet, by regular mail, from Germaine. The packet includes, meditation instructions for you and for teaching, meditation ash for you and each child/teen, and a small photo of Shivabalayogi, the original teacher of this silent meditation. At the time of requesting, please indicate the age, sex and attention span of your child/children or teen(s) so that we may best determine the appropriate length of meditation time. Germaine has been a meditation teacher for almost thirty years specializing in meditation for children, teens and families with individualized and group instruction, consultation by email, phone or in person, all free of charge. Under the auspices of the Yogaville Community Association, Germaine teaches Children/Teens Meditation every Sunday morning at 9:30am in the meditation hall at Satchidananda Ashram, Yogaville. All are welcome, no charge. She resides in Yogaville, Buckingham, VA, germaineamma@hotmail.com, 434-969-2900.
